Courtney Hurley

I’m from what I like to call the Markham bubble in the GTA. To be quite honest I don’t know if I want to be a journalist. I love to write and I love to learn even more and journalism is an outlet for me to do both. I hate when people ask me what my favourite book is because I think it’s an impossible question to answer but 1984, Angels and Demons and The Perks of Being a Wallflower are all up there. Procrastination is my worst enemy and pretty much takes any form. In fact writing this little bio is allowing me to procrastinate from finishing a story with a fast approaching deadline. My quote to live by comes from one of my favourite movies, Garden State: “If you can’t laugh at yourself, life’s going to seem a whole lot longer than you like.”
After graduation I want to travel the world. I want to escape the Markham bubble and try to forget about the fact that I will soon have to find a real job. If I could have dinner with one person it would be my grandfather. He died of cancer when I was three so I never really got the chance to meet him. As much as I love hearing stories about him, I think they would be a lot better firsthand. My favourite part about j-school is getting the chance to talk to people I might never have had the chance to meet, learn things I might never have known, and do things I might never have considered. While the hardest lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t take rejection personally. I would love to one day work as a foreign correspondent.
